  14. <p>     DIED. Floyd ("Bill") Bevens, 75, New York Yankees pitcher who
  15. came within one put-out away from pitching the first no-hit game
  16. in World Series history; of lymphoma; in Salem, Ore. In Game 4
  17. of the 1947 series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cookie
  18. Lavagetto spoiled Bevens' bid with a two-run double off the
  19. outfield wall to win the game 3-2. Though the Yankees went on to
  20. win the Series, Bevens suffered a dead arm. Neither he nor
  21. Lavagetto ever appeared in a regular season game again.
